Dermal Filler: Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is an FDA- and Health Canada–approved dermal filler for correction of facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds; treatment of fine lines/wrinkles in the cheek area. For exact indications and treatment areas in Canada, review the current Canadian Instructions for Use and the MDALL entry.

Contraindications include: severe allergies (including history of anaphylaxis) or multiple severe allergies; hypersensitivity to any ingredient (PLLA, carboxymethylcellulose, mannitol); and a history/risk of hypertrophic scarring or keloids. Do not inject into blood vessels or into areas with active skin infection or inflammation.

Possible side effects include: swelling, pain, infection, allergic reactions, and less commonly, nodules or granulomas; vascular compromise and necrosis are rare but serious. Discuss risks, benefits, and management plans with a qualified, specially trained provider before treatment. https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/dermal-filler-dos-and-donts-wrinkles-lips-and-more

Note on hands: FDA approval for hand augmentation applies to Radiesse (CaHA) (and Restylane Lyft), not PLLA.
Verify approvals: Always check current labeling and approvals on the FDA and Health Canada sites. https://health-products.canada.ca/mdall-limh/information?licenceId=71658&type=active&lang=eng
